Make The Most Out of Your Off Season

  • Off season is when most competitive athletes seek to improve and gain an advantage over their competition. I know I did and that is what I encourage my campers to do.
  • That being said. This is your “off season” so take some time off and play some other sports. Multi sport athletes make the best athletes. We study all of this. Multi sport athletes yield better decision making and pattern recognition as well as increased creativity. These are qualities that coaches look for in players of all sports. Play a fun sport along with hockey over the summer. Golf, tennis, sailing, swimming, lax, baseball, basketball.
  • The 10K hour rule. Yes it applies most especially for our sport of hockey if you are going for the elite status. Hockey is hard, many like me believe it is the hardest sport.  Scientific research has shown that other sports require less hours to reach the top: basketball 4K hours, field hockey 4K hours, wrestling 6K hours. More proof. Hockey is hard.
  • Remember this over the summer…just like lacrosse players who bring their stick around in hopes of a game of catch. Get out on the driveway this summer. Shoot pucks, make targets, use your Mr. Assist. Bring your stick everywhere with a very simple thing. A tennis ball. I will be handing out the pro amb tennis balls at check in and in swag bag among a lot of other goodies.
  • Run. Distance and explosive sprints in the driveway or high school track. This does not require a coach. Maybe mom or dad can go and time you periodically through the summer.
  • Clinics, camps, tourneys, private lessons, strength training, summer leagues, small group skills, showcases, catching up on sleep, eating right, reading, beaching, and fun should all be part of your off season.
  • But…it IS THE TIME TO GET AHEAD. On your own, make your own plan. Work your plan.

  • The Summer Hockey Growth Spurt.
  • A few spots left at Surf Hockey at both locations. This is a perfect example of mixing up your training during the off season. Surfing is balance, all core, legs and vitamin SEA(all perfect cross training for hockey players)…in the morning we will BATTLE CAMP. Night we will strength train, and mentally train.
